Western Coalfields to expand Ghonsa mine

The Coal India subsidiary, Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) has received clearance from the Union Environment Ministry for expanding production capacity of its Ghonsa open cast mine in Maharashtra at a cost of over Rs 102 crore.The expansion will enable the company to increase the capacity to 0.60 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from 0.45 mtpa with an increase in mine lease area to 278.68 hectare from 128.79 hectare.

Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI), which is headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Jharkhand government are said to be taking efforts to develop iron ore mines in the 800 sq km Saranda forest division of Jharkhand.
